Comida Con Causa was our semester project that taught us about Latin America roots and how several countries have developed. At the beginning of the semester we were asked the questions, Why do poor people historically inhabit rich lands? and How do we combat inequities in the food system? Our project was based around these two questions. Throughout the semester we were assigned a Latin American country to research about and in the end make a final product that represented all the research we had done all semester. Our country was Venezuela, while researching about Venezuela we found out a lot about Venezuela's economy and political views. Above is my final draft of my product my group made to represent Venezuela
Here is a link to one of the most useful resources I found while researching Venezuela: https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/monographs/2009/RAND_MG838.pdf The link above is to a book I had read during a part of the semester. The book talked a lot about Venezuela's economy and how the country relied so much on oil production. Going into the process of Venezuela, I knew close to nothing at all about the country. I found this book during a class field trip to the Mesa College library. Throughout the semester this was the resource I used the most to help me with my final research paper. My research paper was focused around the economy and oil producing of Venezuela, I think that this book is very helpful if you want to learn more about the fall of the economy and how Venezuela is recovering to this day from it. When writing my research paper I found it very helpful the more drafts of the paper I did. I ended up with five drafts rough drafts until my final draft was created. Along the way I had done lots of peer critique with my group partners. I felt that they were the best choice to help me with my paper because they know exactly what I'm talking about during the paper. They were able to give me helpful feedback not only on the paper, but also on the content that the paper contained. I think with them having known what we were researching on Venezuela, helped them be able to give good critique on my research paper. Throughout the project at times it became very stressful, but I am very proud of the outcome of all the work I did throughout the semester. I think that the semester helped me improve in many skills such a my writing and artistic skills. I think that I am most proud of my art piece that is shown in the two images above. my group put a lot of time and effort into the specific piece because we wanted that to be the perfect and tell a story of Venezuela and be drawn to represent Hugo Chavez (Venezuela's 63rd president). I think that my group did a great job on collaborating on everything because we all had similar visions on where we wanted to go with the end product. It was very easy to work with each other because we were friends before the semester, so I think that it did help, but also I think having our different skillsets also helped us work together very effectively. The project helped me learn that there is more going on in the world than you think. When researching I found out the Venezuela is currently in a food crisis, I would have never known that if it weren't for this project. It helped me gain perspective on other things going on outside of the United States. If I were to do this project again I would work on my groups time management skills and be planned out ahead because I think that even though our final draft turned out the way we wanted it to, there were some days that we had to rush because we were getting close to the deadline. Also, there were sometimes when we had to change our idea because our original idea wasn't possible to do at the time due to restrictions on that particular day. I think a moments that stuck out not only to me, but my group as well, was when we had seen the reactions from people to our final art piece. When people would see us working on it or even just at our exhibition, it was shocking to see how many people the out art piece was beautiful and gave us so many compliments on it. It made me feel really grateful to have a group throughout the semester that was very supportive and hardworking to make the outcome of the product.
