This semester I was apart of a project called Food Equity. Throughout the time of this project I worked under the organization, Champions for Health. For this project, we had to research and volunteer with an organization assigned to us that could help us understand more about food equity. We dove deep into the statistics of food spread out through the entire country. Above is the final product of all of our findings. We created a presentation that laid out all of our concluding research. During this project we researched into different statistics that told us more about food equity around the country. We got the majority of our information off the Champions for Health website. The variables in our dataset are insecurity towards food, store availability, access to food stores, restaurant availability, food assistance (some of the programs included in this are free and reduced lunch and breakfast programs and child and adult care), food price taxes, local foods (meaning that the food is grown locally), health and socioeconomic variables in health (this would be something similar to a demographic stating some certain data like different races in the population, and poverty rates). In my sophomore year, I did a project that also dealt with food equity, but I saw it from a humanities view. Having done that project last year it helped me get an all around view of how this topic affects our country and other countries as well.
This year something that was different that I enjoyed was getting to collaborate with the sophomores who were doing the humanities side of the project. Being able to come together with them was great because they brought to the table what exactly the problems were and we were able to back it up with the facts and statistics to prove it to be true. Something that I found to be difficult was that the person we were supposed to volunteer with at Champions for Health didn’t end up responding to our emails. Every group was assigned a different organization that they would be volunteering with throughout the semester. While the rest of the class got the opportunity to volunteer, we had to work with just the information of their website. Not being able to have the experience of being at the organization I think took away from our project. We weren’t able to get more information from them in person on what their organization is about, so all we were left with was the website. Overall, I think that my group had a successful semester with this project. We worked very well together and finished out the semester with a strong final piece.
